50 Favourite Funds
Time for a fresh start
Last year was overshadowed by huge political and economic uncertainties, from the domestic trauma of a general election and the coalition’s draconian cost-cutting measures to the sovereign debt crises of Greece and Ireland.
Yet markets have proved relatively resilient, and attractive opportunities have been there for the fund managers willing and able to exploit them. The challenge for investors, as usual, has lain in identifying those sectors and managers best placed to deliver the goods and outperform their peers. That’s where our annual roundup of 50 expert fund suggestions for a range of investment requirements comes in.
The 2010 shortlist, although something of a mixed bag, included some outstanding performances from funds such as Invesco Perpetual Global Smaller Companies and Aegon High Yield Bond fund . We review our experts’ 2010 choices against the backdrop of the past year and this is available on our website. For the fi rst time, our IFA panelists have selected investment trusts as well as open-ended funds. We have also branched out with a section featuring tips for small and mid-cap funds.
But to kick off , we’ve asked our panel for a few ideas as to how to combine some of the 50 funds to create a well-balanced Isa portfolio. Of course, there are no guarantees that the favourites will stay the course in 2011, nor that quirky outsiders will necessarily come good. But we hope the ideas of our experts will prove an interesting and profitable place to start building or expanding your portfolio.
